naked/exposed binding: What is it?

Naked/Exposed Binding does exactly what it says on the tin (or on the book!) It involves a binding technique where the spine of a thread-sewn book is exposed or covered in cloth. Pages are folded into groups of sections, which are then sewn together by hand at the spine. Once sewn, the spine is glued to give extra support. Naked bound books open near flat.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Naked binding offers a very striking and unique option, and works especially well when used by artists for showcasing their work or for books on subjects such as architecture. It works especially well when vibrant and bright cloth covers and threads are selected. It is better suited for short runs, as it is a time consuming process with a lot of handwork involved. Our services include three high-quality digital presses - two colour presses and one monochrome press, including the iGEN5, which is recognized for its exceptional performance, consistency, versatility, color precision, and reliability.

The iGEN5 is capable of accommodating a broader sheet size and more options than most digital presses, enabling us to produce various formats and help clients achieve efficient costs., We have also invested in a Xerox Versant with an inline saddle stitcher. Allowing us to print saddle stitch booklets at breakneck speed.

WHAT WORKS WITH IT?

Being a rather “modern” style of binding, naked binding lends itself well to experimenting with debossing logos and bold creative cover styles, For durability we’d recommend this type of book works better with boards attached to support the covers. Black and white foils and primary colours work especially well as a contrast to the exposed thread. The minimum page count for this format is 32 pages, but this unusual style really shines when pagination allows for the thread to show slightly more.
